BCOG: THE JOURNEY OF BUILDING A
HEALTHY MULTIETHNIC CHURCH

For BCOG, the journey of building a healthy multiethnic church body has involved ongoing, intentional work only possible through dependence on God and the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel of John, Christ prayed for his disciples to be one as He and the Father are One, that the world would come to know Him. That’s the “why” as we seek to fulfill the great commission.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY BUILDING A
HEALTHY MULTIETHNIC CHURCH?

Building a healthy multiethnic church is a “work in progress.” It means striving to build a church where people of diverse ethnic, racial and economic backgrounds will themselves to:

  • Walk, work, & worship God together as one

  • Work hard at building deep-level relationships across lines of difference

  • Establish equitable systems of church authority, leadership, & accountability

  • Advocate & advance justice, mercy, & tangible work in the community in the name of Christ

  • Embrace the tension of sound theology & relevant application in “real time” for the sake of the Gospel

HOW WE ARE GETTING THERE:

Multiethnic Conversations Small Group Study

A small group experience that helps believers process three important elements:

  1. God’s Word

  2. The world’s reality

  3. Our responsibility to be Christ’s agents of healing and transformation in a broken and hurting world

The Gathering Workgroup

The core goal of this group is to bring people of diverse backgrounds together to learn, build relationships and create positive change within and beyond the walls of BCOG. They focus on planning carefully designed fellowship opportunities, games, speakers & educational movies related to race, equity, diversity, social & economic justice, with Christ as the cornerstone.

Visitor Follow Up & Connection Workgroup

The core goal of this group is to explore & implement creative ways to connect with visitors that lead them to church membership & engagement in BCOG service & activities based on their gifts, interests & abilities. They work on strategies for helping persons who are on the “fringes” of BCOG to get more tightly connected in.

Prayer & Fasting Workgroup

The core goal of this group is to keep BCOG before the Lord in prayer as we seek to build a healthy multiethnic church. This group sets the direction and times for fasting and prayer and works to generate prayer lists centered around the church’s vision & goals. They plan special prayer events within and beyond the walls of BCOG.

The Forum Workgroup

The core goal of this group is to provide a structure that helps ensure the growth and development of BCOG as a healthy multiethnic church. It is intended to serve as a steering group to ensure that a broad spectrum of ideas is included in the effort of building a healthy multiethnic church and is charged with creating plans for expanding the work moving forward.
