Brownsville Church of God Cemetery est. 1878:
A Legacy of Courage and Freedom
Welcome to the historical resting grounds of the Brownsville Church of God Cemetery. Since 1878, our cemetery has served as a sacred space of remembrance, peace, and deep historical significance for our area and generations of veterans and families. It also serves as a fitting location to honor the residents of Brownsville who risked everything to support those seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad.

-
Sacred Sanctuary: Before the Civil War Brownsville (also known as Africa) served as a clandestine stop on the Underground Railroad, helping dozens of brave individuals cross into freedom.
-
National Recognition: The National Park Service has formally added our site to the exclusive Underground Railroad Network to Freedom registry.
-
State Marker Unveiling: The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has awarded a new state historical marker that will be permanently placed on our grounds to honor this enduring history.
-
Community Impact: This honor recognizes the collaborative, interracial network of early members who risked everything for justice.
Full Announcement: Read the complete press release to learn how we were honored with these two prestigious honors. We shall host a dedication ceremony during the Spring of 2027, and you can attend this historic community celebration. Press Release
